The Changing Global Economy ( ECON401 ) Assignment
The Changing Global Economy ( ECON401 ) - Assignment Example The firms which had failed in UK allowed their businesses to overextend through risk taking and excessive leverage, over dependence on risky product streams like derivatives or buy-to-let mortgages, poor decisions of management in respect of acquisitions, over reliance on wholesale funding. Unprecedented innovation and growth have been seen in the financial sector over the past two decades as new products and higher returns have been sought by the investors in the era of low interest rates. Banks also had an obligation to understand the risks to which they are exposed. The complexity of certain financial instruments and the interconnected developed global market often did not provide well understanding of the dangers involved with the banks, its investors and boards, central banks and regulators (HM Treasury, 2009). The risk models of banks were proved as flawed which was based on incomplete application of principles of finance. It was believed that risks had been widely distributed throughout the financial system by the method of securitization but it proved as mistaken and risks posed by global increase in leverage were under-estimated. The remuneration policies of banks have contributed to the riskiness of financial system as they focused too much on short term prof it. Market discipline also proved as an ineffective constraint on risk taking in financial markets (Independent Commission on Banking, 2011).There were certain deficiencies in the corporate governance of banking institutions. The board of banks failed to understand this and they got prone to the risk management processes of their firms. The senior management also did not question on the sustainability and nature of achieved higher returns. Many institutional shareholders were not able to monitor the effectiveness of senior management of banks nor did they challenge the decisions of board of bank. Generally, the banks and investors rely on the assessments of credit rating agency but

Buyers behaviour - samsung galaxy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Buyers behaviour - samsung galaxy - Essay Example This is more so in a market where competition is intense, sellers are many, and the target market is relatively the same. Such a market environment informs the analysis of Samsung Galaxy in terms of the behaviour exhibited by its buyers. Samsung Galaxy buyers, just like any other consumer, are rational, and they seek to maximize their welfare at the minimum cost possible. However, this does not mean that they can only buy cheap phones that are offered in the market. Purchases of Samsung Galaxy are influenced by a number of variables, all of which are captured by the decision making theory. In problem recognition, buyers identify their need to buy a phone. This creates a difference between what they have and what they want to purchase. The need or desire to buy Samsung Galaxy constitutes the main problem for which the buyer seeks a resolution. Once the problem has been recognized, the buyer has to move to the next step, which is information search (Jackson, 2008, p.47). The informatio n available to the buyer influences the decision that the buyer makes. While total market information may be hard to capture, product reviews, friends, and advertisements among others act as sources of information for the buyer. Price, quality, product features, brand image, company reputation, product design, and past experiences (Grant, 2011, p.73) are some of the key variables that matter to a Samsung Galaxy buyer. ... On the same note, the respective companies target relatively the same markets. In this respect, product differentiation is vital as buyers move to settle on the best available alternative (Kerin, et al. 2006, p.205; Ward & Aleksandra, 2008, p.227). The actual product choice by the buyer depends on the prior steps in the theory of decision making (Michell, 2011, p.180). Here, the buyer will settle on the alternative product that suits his/her need, desire, tastes, and preferences, not overlooking product affordability and quality factors. For majority Samsung Galaxy buyers who were interviewed, the most influential factors in product choice are product features and design. These two are complemented by price, brand image, Samsungââ¬â¢s reputation in the telecommunications industry, and consumer past experiences with Samsung products. The outcomes exhibited by Samsung Galaxy buyers in regard to the decision making theory show mixed reactions about the product, the company, and the m arket environment. Samsung Galaxy features like camera, GPS, entertainment, calendar/address book, media player, internet access/search/email, handset, design, price, and battery life scored more than more average level of importance to many buyers. Preferences for Blackberry and iPhone in the same line are equal to, exceed, or exhibit lower levels compared to the Samsung Galaxy. On the same note, market trends and personal concerns for each buyer on the product vary significantly (Castells, 2007, p.246; Peters, 2009, p.69). Also, an outstanding factor in the whole analysis is consumer awareness and Samsungââ¬â¢s reputation in the industry. In this respect, the price, features and design of the smartphone inform

Lovecraft's argument or postion to Paradox of Horror Essay
Lovecraft's argument or postion to Paradox of Horror - Essay Example And this is the point where I will start my argument. Someone can and many people go around looking for scary things not because they are forced but because they find excitement in the horror part of art. Many people get scared but still continue to love the art of horror and the scary nature of the horror art. Someone can seek for a scary thing or disgusting thing for entertainment. Since the times of the Romans, scary acts have been used for entertainment. This can be seen from the way that criminals were killed. Some of the criminals were set out and a lion left to eat them as a large crowd watched and celebrated. This shows that there is a sense of excitement in humans when they get scared over something. Most of the people who seek horror in art mainly do so because of its entertainment nature. Therefore I can say that the above saying that no one can seek out for a scary or disgusting thing is wrong. People can seek out scary things and movies because of their entertainment nat ure. Someone can also seek horror and scary art scenes so as to remove stress. Stress has been known to disturb man since creation. Many people forget about their stress when they see something that is scary. This is because when they see the disgusting part of the art, they forget about their problems and start to feel for the situation that is making them scared. At this point their stress goes away and they become relieved for some time. Therefore someone can use horror to remove stress that they have. This clearly disapproves Lovecraftââ¬â¢s idea that no one can seek for any disgusting or scary thing. Many people look for scary things to remove stress and this is a better argument to prove that Lovecraft statement is wrong. People also seek scary art so as to take a lesson from the art. When people see how someone suffers, they get the lesson not to what the victim did to undergo such suffering. Some people just love learning lessons about something and so when they get to se e how someone has suffered, they get thee reason of his/her suffering and take it as a lesson so that next time they donââ¬â¢t do the same mistakes as the ones done by the person who suffers in the horror act. Apart from the educative nature of horror acting, there are people who love horror simply because of its scary nature. When they experience the scary part of the horror, they get some excitement that makes them feel better. Horror is like part of their life so when arguing this, these people should not be left out of the debate. This group of people help to prove that there are people out there who go for horror acting because they want to and not because they are forced. If we say that people donââ¬â¢t look for scary acts because they like it then it means that everyone who participate in the production and anyone who enjoys horror movies or act do so because they are under some obligation or that they do that because of circumstances that they canââ¬â¢t avoid and if given a chance they can do the acting or watching of the horror movies. This is an invalid argument since almost everyone who watches horror movies do so because they love it and not because someone has told them to watch it. Many people would argue that maybe their love for horror movies come due to the influence of the people around them and the environmental

Abortion in Australia Essay -- Argumentative Persuasive Argument Essay
Abortion in Australia à à à à à Our world today is full of unsolved, devisive and controversial issues. Most of them relate to our morals, ethics and religion, thus creating a very strong ââ¬Ëyesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢, or ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ side. Like the Chinese Yin and Yang sign, abortion has a very prominent ââ¬Ëblackââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëwhiteââ¬â¢ side but also contains traces of each in the alternating colour. This shows that if you were to come to any kind of conclusion on abortion, there would still be a downside to it, and that is primarily why the world cannot agree on this sensitive and emotional issue. à à à à à Being female myself, I can understand why a woman would want to have an abortion. Being pregnant and wishing you werenââ¬â¢t is probably the worst feeling a woman can have. Knowing that if you brought a child into the world and you didnââ¬â¢t want it, or you would have to give it up for adoption is such a disheartening way to start off, and you and the un-born child would be so much better off if you were to terminate the pregnancy and wait for a more appropriate time, or in the case of rape, put the past behind you and move on. à à à à à Society has attached a stigma to abortion. When we hear of women having abortions, we seem to automatically think that she wasnââ¬â¢t careful enough, or she didnââ¬â¢t use contraception. We forget to stop and think about the other possible reasons she may have accidentally become pregnant. Just forgetting to take one pill per packet can reduce itââ¬â¢s effectiveness and also taking anti-biotics, or being ill can also undermine the way the pill works. Condoms can tear or be forgotten, and emergency contraceptives like the ââ¬Ëmorning afterââ¬â¢ pill are underprescribed and not readily available. Would it surprise you that over 50% of women getting an abortion in Britain used some form of contraception when they got pregnant? This obviously shows that women are having huge problems with using contraception, and something needs to be done about it now. Starting by educating women more on the pill and the way it works, the after effects of abortion, and the risks of having an abortion. We donââ¬â¢t want abortion to become the easy way out though. People just need to know more about it and have to satisfy specific criteria before having the pregnancy terminated, for instance by interviews with doctorââ¬â¢s, given unbiased advice, and consultations with peop... ...at Justice Menhennit ruled that abortion was legal in Australia, to protect the life or health of the woman. This has made abortion available to all who need it, and women can go to Family Planning Centres all over Australia and receive the advice and support that they need. So far about 20,000 Victorian women have an abortion in a year, but that doesnââ¬â¢t compare to the statistics in Britain where 1 in every 4 women will have an abortion at some stage. Lets just keep abortion as the very last option and not travel down the path in which Britain and the USA are heading. We donââ¬â¢t want babies getting thrown out in bins like vegetable waste now do we Works Cited: 1) ââ¬Å"Doctor quits, cites anti-abortion threatsâ⬠http://www.washingtonpost.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/AppLogic 2) ââ¬Å"Half UK Women seeking abortion used contraceptionâ⬠http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/999013/sc/health_contraception_2.html 3) Abortion Information http://www.medico.abort.jk24/ss_health.com 4) ââ¬Å"Scotland Church Chided on Abortionâ⬠http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/19991011/wl/scotland_pregnancy_4.html 5) Abortion at Family Planning Centres 171 Berkeley Street, Carlton, 3053 Melbourne, Australia

Bowling Ethnography
Heather Dooley 10 Pound Balls We tend to think that bowling is a very simple and boring sport played by only older men. I did my fieldwork at a bowling alley during two different leagues to explore the different social interactions among bowlers. I learned that bowling is not limited to one specific age group or gender. I also discovered there is a unique hierarchy among the bowlers that is not determined by their age or gender. This social status is dependent upon their bowling average, type of ball used, and the weight of their balls. I found there were many other social interactions that occurred between smaller groups of bowlers such as teammates. I first entered the field during a Wednesday night bowling league. The bowling alley was filled with mostly men. I walked the length of the building and couldnââ¬â¢t find any women bowling. I soon found out this was a men only bowling league. I was told there was also a women only bowling league that occurred on Tuesdayââ¬â¢s. The majority of the men bowling were middle-aged or older. However, there were a lot of men in their twenties bowling as well. On my second entry into the field it was during a Friday night bowling league. On this night the bowlers were all different ages but with a majority of younger men and women in their twenties. When I walked the length of the bowling alley that night I counted almost an equal amount of women as I did men. In this league it was required to have at least two or three women on each team. This is called a mixed league. On the third night of observations, my second Wednesday night, I sat down at a table with a team of bowlers. Three were in their twenties and two were in their late forties. While I was talking to one of the younger men I told him how I noticed a lot less women in this league then the Friday night league. I asked what the requirements were, if any, to join either league. He said ââ¬Å"In order to join this league you had to have a 180 average. â⬠He also told me this league was more competitive because it was only men and because they had the average requirement. This league has a larger amount of money to be won at the end of the season because of the competitiveness. When the bowler referred to average he meant the average amount of pins he will usually knock down during three games. Every game you have the opportunity to knock down 120 pins. Each game played has ten frames. The term frames means each turn all the bowlers take. Every frame the bowler has the chance to knock down ten pins. If you knock down all ten pins at once this is called a strike. When you bowl a strike it earns you more then ten points. If you bowl a strike for every frame you can receive a 300 game. This is the highest score you can reach and it is very difficult to achieve. Strike Terminology: 1 ââ¬â Strike 2 ââ¬â Double 3 ââ¬â Turkey 4 ââ¬â Four Bagger 5 ââ¬â Five Bagger 6 ââ¬â Six Bagger 7 ââ¬â Seven Bagger 8 ââ¬â Eight Bagger 9 ââ¬â Nine Bagger 10 ââ¬â Ten Bagger 11 ââ¬â Eleven Bagger 12 ââ¬â Twelve Bagger I discovered the main way bowlers judge each otherââ¬â¢s skills is through the average they hold. Someone with a 250 average considers himself a better bowler then someone with a 185 average, even if the lower average bowler beats him in a game. Another form of bowling hierarchy is determined by the type of ball you use. Some bowlers will pay anywhere between $250 to more than $300 for just one ball! I learned that there are different types of bowling balls made to help you throw the ball a certain way. Some people may buy a ball they can throw straight better and others buy balls they can throw with a curve better. While I was sitting at the table with the bowlers I overheard a couple of them talking about their balls. Some men used them as a way to brag to the other men. They would say the reason another man is bowling so bad is because he has a bad, cheap ball. I also noticed the men bowlers would use the weight of their balls to poke fun at the other bowlers. They will compare their ballââ¬â¢s weight to their manhood or manliness. For instance, ââ¬Å"Wow, youââ¬â¢re only using that little ten pound ball. Did you borrow that from your girlfriend? â⬠ââ¬Å"Careful carrying that big sixteen pound ball you might not be big enough for that yet. â⬠[pic] There are many different kinds of socialization among the bowlers. They joke and tease each other, give tips on how to bowl better and they also play card games with their teammates. There are two different types of games played among the different leagues. On Wednesday night they play a game called Kiddy Pot. This is a money game played by the men bowlers only that corresponds to how well you are playing. If you miss the five pin, throw a gutter ball, or miss the head pin twice you lose a dollar. If you are hung, which in bowling terms means four members of your team strike or split during the same frame but one does not, then the person who misses the strike loses two dollars. If all five members of the team strike during the frame, the next frame whoever misses the strike loses a dollar. At the end of the season all of the money lost playing this game is split among the players of the team evenly. [pic] [pic] The Friday night bowling league plays a different game. This game is set up like poker. Every member of the team who throws a strike or a split will get a card from the deck. If you miss a spare or have an open frame then a card is taken away from your pile. At the end of each game the person with the best poker hand wins. Usually any women who play this game donââ¬â¢t lose a card if they miss a spare or have an open frame. I learned that bowling is a very complex social structure with its own set of socialization rules and terms. It is not gender or age specific. Bowlers have their own private language they use to communicate towards one another. They are generally accepting of outsiders joining in on their conversations and own private jokes. Is there more I could learn my entering the field and joining a league myself?

The Autobiography, Over My Head, By Claudia Osborn
The autobiography, Over My Head, by Claudia Osborn, gave a glimpse into the life of a former Doctor. The book started by giving insight into Claudiaââ¬â¢s life including her challenging career, whom she spent her days with and how she used her free time. Based on the title of the book I was expecting her to suffer from a traumatic brain injury, but I had not anticipated her reaction to it. Although I was aware of some disorientation after the incident, and even some memory loss, I was unaware of her disorientation to the life she once knew. Initially, when Claudia did not realize she had any memory deficits, I was convinced it was due to denial. She was a doctor, I would have thought she would understand her injury and recognize that her injury was as severe as it truly was. Later on in the book, I realized that she was not completely in denial, but truly thought there was nothing truly wrong with her. This could possibly be due to her perspective that nothing bad would happen to her. Every one sees something bad happen whether it is a car accident, cancer, or a traumatic brain injury and they think, ââ¬Å" It wonââ¬â¢t happen to me.â⬠In Claudiaââ¬â¢s case, it is an extremely frightening and frustrating situation. The History of Hypodermic Needles and Syringes
Various forms of intravenous injection and infusion have been around as far backà as the late 1600s. However, it wasnt until 1853 thatà Charles Gabriel Pravaz and Alexander Wood developedà a needle fine enough to pierce the skin.à The syringeà was the first device used to inject morphine as a painkiller.à The breakthrough alsoà eliminatedà many of the technical difficulties facing those experimenting with blood transfusion. Credit for the evolution of the universally useful hypodermic syringe with its hollow, pointed needle is usually given to Dr. Wood. He came up with the invention after experimenting with a hollow needle for the administration of drugs and found thatà the method was not necessarily limited to the administration of opiates. Eventually, he felt confident enough to publish a short paper in The Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Review titledà ââ¬Å"A New Method of Treating Neuralgia by the Direct Application of Opiates to the Painful Points.â⬠At about the same time, Charles Gabriel Pravaz, of Lyon, was making a similar syringe that quickly came into use during surgeries under the name of the ââ¬Å"Pravaz Syringe.â⬠A Brief Timeline of Disposable Syringes Arthur E. Smithà received eight U.S. patents for disposableà syringes in 1949 and 1950.In 1954, Becton, Dickinson and Companyà created the first mass-produced disposable syringe and needle produced in glass. It was developed for Dr. Jonas Salks mass administration of the new Salk polio vaccine forà one million American children.Roehr Productsà introduced a plasticà disposable hypodermic syringe called theà Monoject in 1955.Colin Murdoch, a pharmacist from Timaru, New Zealand, patented aà plastic disposable syringeà to replace the glass syringe in 1956. Murdoch patented a total of 46 inventions,à including a silent burglar alarm, automatic syringes for vaccinating animals, the childproof bottle top and the tranquilizer gun.à In 1961, Becton Dickinson introduced its first plastic disposable syringe, the Plastipak.African American inventorà Phil Brooksà received a U.S. patent for a disposable syringe on April 9, 1974. Syringes for Vaccinationsà Benjamin A. Rubin is credited for inventing the pronged vaccinating and testing needle orà vaccination needle. This was a refinement to the conventional syringe needle. Dr. Edward Jenner performed the first vaccination. Theà English physician began to develop vaccines by studying the link between smallpox and cowpox, a milder disease.à He injected one boy with cowpox and found that the boy became immune to smallpox. Jenner published his findings in 1798. Within three years, as many as 100,000 people in Britain had been vaccinated against smallpox.à Alternatives to Syringesà The microneedle is a painless alternative to the needle and syringe. Aà chemical engineering professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology named Mark Prausnitzà teamed up with electrical engineer Mark Allen to develop the prototype microneedle device. It is made up of 400 silicon-based microscopic needles ââ¬â each the width of a human hair ââ¬â and looks something like the nicotine patch used to help people quit smoking. Its tiny, hollow needles are so small that any medication can be delivered through the skin without reaching the nerve cells that create pain. Microelectronics within the device control the time and dosage of the medicine delivered. Another delivery device is the Hypospray. Developed by PowderJect Pharmaceuticals in Fremont, California, theà technology uses pressurized helium to spray dry powdered medications on the skin for absorption.
